Seventeen Syrians drowned after their boat sank off the Turkish coast on its way to the Greek island of Leros on Sunday. Another 20 refugees were rescued by the Turkish coast guard, Amir Cicek, governor of Mugla province announced. No one was missing or unaccounted for. Mr Cicek said the 37 Syrians had boarded the boat at the holiday resort of Gumusluk on the Bodrum peninsula. It sank soon after leaving the coast.

The drownings added to the growing death toll from the migration crisis gripping Europe. Meanwhile, Austria’s finance minister has warned that the rising cost of looking after refugees may wreck budget plans of some European governments, as they struggled to afford new homes and schools. “The short-term costs are high but predictable. More critical is the question of the longer-term effects (on the budgets),” Hans Joerg Schelling said in an interview published on Sunday.
