£1bn hit: Jurassic World is now the third highest-grossing film of all time

Jurassic World is now the third highest-grossing film in history, behind only Titanic and Avatar. The dinosaur thriller has racked up $1.52bn (£980m), pushing it past Marvel’s The Avengers and its $1.519bn haul. Universal, the studio behind Jurassic World, has cracked the top five list of highest-grossing films twice this year after propelling Furious 7 to $1.51bn globally. Before 2015, no Universal release had ever passed $1bn (£640m) at the worldwide box office. More than a decade separated installments in the series — Jurassic Park III hit cinemas in 2001. After taking the summer box office by storm, Jurassic World will be getting a sequel earmarked for June 22, 2018, Comcast Corporation’s Universal Pictures announced today.
