A show of devotion: Faithful dog guards trapped canine companion for a week

Two missing dogs have been found safe after one loyally stood guard for a week when the other got trapped in the woods. Tillie, a setter, stayed with basset hound Phoebe after she became stuck in an old water cistern in a ravine in Washington state. She left for just a few minutes each day to search for help. Volunteer group Vashon Island Pet Protectors, which had been searching for the dogs for a week, called Tillie’s refusal to abandon her friend “a humbling example of the power of love”.

With a needle in the haystack hope we made our way into the ravine and after a bit of searching, finally heard that sweet sound we have been waiting for all week. A small one-woof response when we called out

The pair were discovered after a member of the public reported a reddish dog had been coming on to their property for several days before darting back into the ravine. Phoebe was found inside the cistern, perched on some rubble to stay out of the water. The concrete walls were slightly too high for her to jump out. Both dogs are said to be doing well.
