As Europe squabbles over migrants, dozens feared dead in double boat sinking

Thirteen migrants, four of them children, have died after their inflatable dinghy collided with a ferry off the Turkish coast. Their bodies were being recovered by coastguards while another 13 people were still missing after the accident off the western port of Canakkale. The sinking was the second on Sunday in the Aegean Sea, with the Greek coastguard reporting another two dozen feared missing from a boat which got into trouble close to Lesbos. Coastguards rescued 20 people spotted in the water by a helicopter deployed by EU border agency Frontex but the survivors said another 26 people had been on board.

The incident is the latest tragedy in the Mediterranean as Europe wrestles with the biggest movement of migrants, most fleeing war in Syria and Iraq, since World War II. Austria said 11,000 migrants crossed into the country from Hungary in the 24 hours up to midnight Saturday night. Another 7,000 were expected on Sunday at the main Nickelsdorf crossing, east of Vienna. Hungary has reopened its main border crossing with Serbia after sealing it off five days earlier to stop the flow of migrants. Austria, Hungary and Croatia have all accused each other of failing to deal effectively with the new arrivals.
