At least 14 killed as ‘Boko Haram female suicide bomber’ targets nightclub

At least 14 people have been killed after a bomb exploded at a popular night spot in Cameroon. The attack happened in the northern town of Maroua when the bomber threw the explosives into the Boucan bar. Some witnesses have claimed it was a suicide attack and the bomber was female. The death toll could eventually be as high as 30 and there were reports that many other people were injured. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but it comes days after Maroua was targeted in two attacks by girl suicide bombers blamed on Boko Haram extremists.

The bomber fled after throwing the bomb. Residents who were not hurt went after him, but he set off a grenade to keep them back.

On Wednesday, explosives worn by two young girls detonated, killing at least 20 people and injuring at least another 22. One of the girls was at a central market and the other was at the next-door Hausa neighbourhood when the explosives detonated. Authorities said one of the girls, aged nine, was disguised as a beggar before the explosives went off. Boko Haram, which was founded in neighbouring Nigeria, has vowed to attack Cameroon because the country has supported the Nigerian military’s mission to defeat the group.
