At least 50 killed as Boko Haram attacks Nigerian village

A survivor hidden in a tree says he watched Boko Haram extremists firebomb huts and heard the screams of children burning to death, among at least 50 people officials say died in the latest attack by Nigeria’s homegrown Islamic extremists. Scores of charred corpses and bodies with bullet wounds littered the streets from Saturday night’s attack on Dalori village and two nearby camps housing 25,000 refugees, according to survivors and soldiers at the scene just 3 miles from Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram and the biggest city in Nigeria’s northeast.

While people were running for their dear lives…three female suicide bombers attempted to make their way into the crowd…and subsequently got blown up.

The attack was swiftly condemned by the European Union, which said it was committed to supporting regional African states in the fight against such extremist groups. Boko Haram has been attacking soft targets, increasingly with suicide bombers, since the military last year drove them out of towns and villages in northeastern Nigeria. With some reports of the death toll far higher, the final count could rise substantially from the latest deadly attack.

The EU remains committed to providing a comprehensive range of political, development and humanitarian support to Nigeria and the region in tackling this threat and in ensuring the sound development of the region.
