Bloodstains and shattered glass: Aftermath of Brussels airport suicide bombing

New pictures showing the destruction caused by the suicide bombings at Brussels’ Zaventem Airport have been released. They show bloodstained floors, shattered glass, and check-in desks heavily damaged from the blasts inside the departure terminal. One image shows a child’s pushchair surrounded by debris. Another shows forensics teams combing the area for evidence. They were released as hundreds of staff took part in safety drills with a view to partially resuming services on Wednesday.

There’s no such thing as normal anymore. That’s a concept we have to revisit.

Mayor of Brussels Yvan Mayeur

More than 30 people were killed and hundreds injured when suicide bombers attacked the airport and a metro station in the city. On Tuesday, airport bosses said it would be weeks before services could return to normal. Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, interior minister Ard van der Steur was forced to backpedal in parliament about the intelligence received on the suicide bombers Ibrahim and Khalid El Bakraoui. He said he had been wrong to suggest the Dutch authorities were tipped off about them by the FBI as the information came from new York police.
