Bodies of seven babies found wrapped in blankets and plastic bags

The bodies of seven babies have been found covered in blankets and packed in plastic bags in a flat. They were uncovered one by one as police went through a room in the property close to the Czech border in Germany. Officers were called to the flat in Bavarian town of Wallenfels by a woman who found the first baby. They are now trying to trace a 46-year-old woman who is believed to have lived in the property for 18 years. She was said to have had three children with her husband and several by a previous relationship but has not been seen since September.

The babies have been found within the apartment. They had been covered in blankets and were packed in plastic bags. That’s how the seven dead bodies have been found one after another.

The bodies are being examined by forensic experts but this “will take some time in view of their poor condition, in some cases”, police said. TV footage showed police outside the property where a large coffin was placed into a hearse on Thursday evening. Several people were being questioned by police but they have not managed to find the suspected mother. According to reports, her husband was often drunk and, when inebriated, would say to her: “I know you have hidden babies’ bodies in the house.” Neighbours, however, described them as “an ordinary family”, who were active in clubs in the town.

Wallenfels is a small community where the people know each other and help each other. Of course many people ask themselves now: Could this have been prevented? Could we have helped?
