Body of former Ivory Coast footballer is pulled from the River Rhine

Ivory Coast international footballer Steve Gohouri has been found dead in Germany, more than three weeks after being reported missing. The body of the 34-year-old, who was said to have suffered from mental health issues, was found in the River Rhine. Gohouri was last seen on December 11 at a Christmas party for TSV Steinbach, the club he had only recently joined. His family had expected him to fly to Paris but he never appeared.

For somebody so young to lose their life is very sad, it’s tragic to find out about a former team-mate passing away.

The defender, who moved to France as a five-year-old, where he was raised in the suburbs of Paris, played 12 times for Ivory Coast. He began his football career in France but played for clubs in Israel, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Greece and Germany. He signed for then Premier League Wigan from Bundesliga stalwarts Borussia Monchengladbach in January 2010. Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

All managers, players, coaches and assistants at TSV Steinbach are very concerned about the death of Steve Gohouri. Our thoughts in these difficult hours are with his family.
