Clinton scrambles to shore up support with more apologies over emails

Hillary Clinton has apologised for using a personal email account on a private server when she was in public office as Secretary of State. “That was a mistake,” she said. The front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination apologised in a series of interviews, going on to repeat the apology in a late-night note to voters on Facebook. Twenty-four hours earlier, Mrs Clinton had insisted there was no need for an apology, because “what I did was allowed”. Mrs Clinton has denied sending classified material on the private account she used exclusively from her upstate New York home during her four years as America’s top diplomat.

That was a mistake. I’m sorry about that. I take responsibility.

Her advisers say she will be talking more about the email saga as her campaign continues and top officials have begun contacting supporters who have donated large sums to her campaign and who are worried about her falling appeal to voters. Later, the woman who is hoping to become the next president appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, whose influential host gave Mrs Clinton her backing. After discussing the emails - and hearing another apology - DeGeneres noted that, were Mrs Clinton to be elected, she would be one of the oldest presidents to take office. Mrs Clinton gave a swift response: “The way I look at it, I would be the youngest woman elected president.”
