Coming back: Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ gets premiere date

Stephen Colbert will debut as the new host of CBS Corp’s “Late Show,” on September 8, the U.S. broadcast television network said on Monday. Colbert, 50, takes over the late-night TV talk show from David Letterman, who will retire after his final broadcast on May 20. The Stephen Colbert character, created for the Colbert Report, will not be making the transition to CBS – but the show’s creative team will.

It’s not clear what Colbert plans to do with the show, though CBS executives – calling him “the smartest guy in the room at 11:30” – believe that Colbert may try to occupy a more topical niche than his comic competitors. In the words of CBS’ entertainment chairman, Nina Tassler: the show will need time to develop the “real Stephen Colbert”.

I wouldn’t give his problems to a monkey on a rock.
