‘Croatia has reached its migrant limit’ says PM amid huge refugee influx

Croatia’s Prime Minister has called a meeting of its national security council after saying the country has reached its limits with the huge influx of refugees and migrants. Zoran Milanovic said Croatia plans to redirect migrants to Hungary and Slovenia, although both countries are taking action to keep them out. He said Croatia has exhausted all its resources dealing with all the arrivals in the past few days and can no longer register people in line with EU rules.

You are welcome in Croatia and you can pass through Croatia. But go on – not because we don’t like you but because this is not your final destination.

Mr Milanovic said migrants will still be allowed to pass through Croatia and perhaps be transferred to its borders, primarily the Hungarian border. Croatia has closed seven of the eight road crossings it shares with Serbia but the flow has continued with refugees at Sid making their way over the border through cornfields. Unless the situation eases Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic said it was only “a matter of time" before all border traffic is shut down. In other developments, German officials have said trains carrying migrants may be diverted past Munich in the coming days to prevent a clash with the city’s annual beer festival.
