‘Day of Rage’ leaves at least three Israelis dead in Palestinian attacks

At least three people have been killed and many more injured in separate attacks in Jerusalem. Two Palestinians carried out a shooting and stabbing attack on a bus in the Armon HaNatziv neighbourhood, killing two people. Israeli police said one of the attackers was killed at the scene, while the other was apprehended. Emergency services said they had also treated eight injured Israelis, four of whom are believed to be in a serious condition. At around the same time another attack appeared to be carried out in the Geula neighbourhood. Initial reports indicated one Israeli was killed and others injured when a vehicle was driven into bystanders. The driver was shot, but his condition is unclear. Earlier in the city of Raanana, north of Tel Aviv, a Palestinian man believed to be from East Jerusalem carried out an attempted stabbing, leaving two people injured.

How the leader of Hamas in Gaza, Ismail Haniey, described the recent violence

Six Israelis have been killed and dozens wounded this month in a wave of violence that has prompted Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to order police and military reinforcements across the East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank. Some 26 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, including 10 identified by Israel as attackers and the rest in clashes with Israeli troops, including two 13 year olds. The Palestinian Health Ministry has reported that more than a thousand people have sustained injuries during confrontations, including those as a result of Israeli troops using live fire. The recent surge in violence has been building momentum for weeks, driven by anger over Israel’s on-going occupation of the West Bank and disputes over access to the Al Aqsa mosque compound in the Old City of Jerusalem.
