Don’t give up the search for Joseph Kony, urges ICC prosecutor

The International Criminal Court’s prosecutor is calling for renewed efforts to arrest notorious militia leader Joseph Kony, after one of his top commanders was taken into custody to face charges of leading a reign of terror in central Africa. Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda says the victims of Kony’s crimes “have waited far too long and deserve to see justice done”. Dominic Ongwen, a commander with Kony’s feared Lord’s Resistance Army, was transferred to the court’s detention centre early Wednesday, two weeks after being taken into custody in Central African Republic.

The arrest of Mr Ongwen, who joined the LRA at the age of 10, comes nearly a decade after he, Kony and other LRA leaders were indicted. Bensouda says the militia “committed unimaginable crimes against humanity and war crimes” and her investigation shows Ongwen is “amongst those who bear the greatest responsibility”.
