Dozens of miners have been trapped underground following the collapse of a gold mine in eastern South Africa. They were caught when a shaft near the head office at Makonjwaan Gold Mine in Barberton “tragically caved in”. Emergency services said 74 miners, with minor injuries, had been rescued and brought to the surface. At least three of the 100 or more thought to have been underground at the time were “unaccounted for”, they added. It was not clear what caused the collapse at the mine, which is located in Mpumalanga province, about 225 miles east of Johannesburg.
Mine rescue services are still busy on scene to rescue the remaining miners underground
