Dozens killed in double suicide bomb attack on worshippers in mosque

At least 30 people have been killed in twin suicide bomb attacks on a mosque in Nigeria. They were killed as they prayed inside the building near to the city of Maidguru. One bomb exploded inside the mosque, while another exploded outside and the force of the blasts destroyed the building. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but among the suspects will be the Boko Haram armed group, which has launched a large number of suicide attacks in the region over the past few months. On Wednesday, three blasts in Maiduguri killed at least five civilians and the suspected suicide bombers.

Witnesses said the bombers slipped into the mosque disguised as worshippers. One of the attackers set off the first blast when he entered the mosque, the second detonated his explosives soon after, when many had gone to the scene to help victims. “We counted 42 dead bodies outside the mosque,” added Amadu Marte, a vigilante supporting the security forces in the fight against Boko Haram. “When rescuers and sympathisers gathered in front of the place, the second one went off, killing many of them,” he added.
