Egypt pledges thousands in compensation as 20th football victim dies

The death toll following a riot outside an Egyptian soccer stadium on Sunday has risen to 20 following the death of a 14-year-old girl, a Health Ministry spokesman told Egyptian television. Hisham Abdel-Hamed from the forensic department said the teenager had died on Monday evening. Families of those who died will be offered up to 125,000 Egyptian pounds in compensation it was announced today (around US$16,400). The Egyptian Football Association said it would distribute 25,000 pounds to families, while the Ministry of Youth and Sports said it would extend 100,000 pounds.

Following the tragic events [at the match] the Ministry of Youth and Sports has decided to extend 100,000 pounds to each of the victim’s families.

Egypt has suspended all Premier League matches following the incident, pending an investigation that will be lead by the sports ministry’s Dr Ashraf Sobhy. Clashes erupted between fans and police when they refused to allow more than 10,000 into the stadium ahead of a match between Zamalek and ENPPI clubs.
