F1 title race back on as Hamilton reins in Rosberg with Monza win

A week that began with Lewis Hamilton being named the GQ Sportsman of the Year ended with a win at the Italian Grand Prix, breathing new life into his second bid for the Formula One title. The Mercedes driver dropped from pole to fourth on the opening lap, but recovered with a daring high-speed slalom to take second and then the lead. It’s his second career victory in Monza and his first race win since the British Grand Prix in July. Hamilton needs just three wins to equal Nigel Mansell’s British record of Grand Prix wins.

The button didn’t press which engages the launch sequence. For the formation lap it didn’t work and when I got to the grid and put it on again, again it didn’t work. It was very strange. I’ve never really had that happen before.

Teammate Nico Rosberg finished second after a costly error at the first chicane saw Hamilton reclaim the lead on lap 29 to finish 3.1 seconds ahead of the German. Rosberg still holds a 22-point lead with six races remaining in the 2014 season. Williams driver Felipe Massa took third—his first podium finish of the year. The next race takes place in Singapore at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
