Fernando Alonso ‘OK and conscious’ after heavy F1 crash in Barcelona

McLaren’s Fernando Alonso is “OK and conscious” after being involved in a heavy crash on the final day of pre-season testing in Barcelona today. The Spaniard, twice world champion, went off the Circuit de Catalunya at turn three, and the right-hand side of his car hit the wall. The corner is usually taken at almost 240 kilometres per hour. The 33-year-old was taken to the circuit’s medical centre for initial treatment before being airlifted to hospital for precautionary checks.

He was conscious and spoke with the doctors. However, as per usual procedure in such circumstances, he was then airlifted to hospital where he is undergoing precautionary checks.

McLaren statement

Neither the team nor track officials have reported the cause of the crash. McLaren has switched to Honda engines ahead of the upcoming season but has been plagued by technical problems. Alonso rejoined McLaren this season after a disappointing fifth and final campaign with Ferrari. He won back-to-back world titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006 before spending one season at McLaren in 2007.

It seems that Alonso is OK. We hope that everything’s alright and all ends with just a shock!
