First death: Woman killed by shelling in Mariupol during Ukraine ceasefire

Shelling erupted in eastern Ukraine’s strategic port of Mariupol and its biggest city Donetsk overnight, threatening a ceasefire struck less than two days earlier between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian separatists. The shelling in Mariupol killed one woman and was followed by explosions near the Donetsk airport early on Sunday. The renewed shelling broke out hours after Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Petro Poroshenko, agreed in a telephone call the truce was holding and discussed ways of getting in humanitarian aid.

Listen to the sound of the ceasefire. There’s … a proper battle going on there.

The ceasefire, brokered by envoys from Ukraine, the separatist leadership, Russia and Europe’s OSCE security watchdog on Friday in Minsk, is part of a peace plan intended to end a five-month conflict that has killed nearly 3,000 people. The road map also includes an exchange of prisoners of war and establishing a humanitarian corridor for refugees and aid. The West and Kiev accuse Moscow of supporting the rebels by sending tanks and troops over the border, although the Kremlin has consistently denied the allegations.
