Freak sequence of ricochets sees father shoot son, 14, dead at range

The brother of a teenage boy accidentally killed by his father at a Florida gun range has described what happened. David Brumby described how a freak sequence of events saw his 14-year-old sibling, Stephen, killed by their father, William. David said a red-hot shell casing ricocheted off a wall, down his dad’s shirt, who accidentally fired off his .22 gun. Stephen died in hospital shortly after being shot at the High Noon Gun Range in Sarasota on Sunday. David said his father was struggling and was still trying to process what had happened.

He had an insatiable appetite to learn and was constantly sharing his wisdom with those around him.

Mother, Elizabeth Brumby

David Brumby told CBS News: “My dad was firing a .22 - just a little semi-automatic pistol - what happened was - the previous shot - the ejected casing - which is super-hot - bounced off the wall and ricocheted down my dad’s shirt. Because it was super-hot the knee-jerk reaction was to try to brush it off and he pulled the gun hand up and tried to brush it off him and the gun went off into the ceiling and ricocheted into my little brother Stephen.” No charges have been filed against William Brumby, although police inquiries are continuing. Meanwhile, Stephen’s mother Elizabeth, who described her son as a “meteor that couldn’t be contained”, has set up a memorial fund to help pay for his funeral.
