Fueling the fight: NATO chides Russia for violating Turkish airspace

In a signal of new tensions raised by Moscow’s airstrikes in Syria, NATO denounced Russia  for “irresponsible behavior” after its warplanes infringed on Turkish airspace. The intrusions, which come amid deep suspicions and mutual distrust between Moscow and the West over Russia’s military action in Syria, highlight the potential for clashes between Russian and allied forces in the increasingly crowded skies over Syria.

Given the stakes and sensitivity around the Russian military action in that region of the world, I think our concerns are well-founded.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest.

Russia said the violation happened due to poor weather in the area, and that it would take action to ensure no further incidents occur. The Kremlin has faced strong international criticism over its role in Syria, with the West viewing Russia’s involvement as an attempt to bolster support for Syrian President Bashar al Assad, but Moscow still insists it is trying to weaken Islamic State.

The aim of our operations lies in providing support to the Syrian military’s offensive in their struggle with terrorist and radical organisations and forces.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
