Gunman wanted over bar attack killed in shoot-out with police at mosque

A gunman who killed three people during an attack on a bar in Tel Aviv has been shot dead by police. Nashat Milhem was cornered in a mosque in his home town of Arara and killed in a gun battle with Israeli officers. The 29-year-old Arab-Israeli came out shooting and “was then shot and killed”, police said. His death ended a week-long manhunt, with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated security forces, who he said had “worked tirelessly, methodically and professionally to locate and eliminate the terrorist”.

I was sitting on my balcony with my cousin… when suddenly shooting began, hundreds of bullets, like in a war

Milhem went on the run after he opened fire at a busy bar in Tel Aviv on New Year’s Day, killing two people and wounding several others. He was identified from video footage in which he was seen browsing in a food shop before casually taking a gun from his backpack and walking to the bar and opening fire. He later shot dead an Arab taxi driver as he escaped. His motive remains unclear. Tensions are high in the region after a wave of violence which has left 22 Israelis and 149 Palestinians, many killed by security forces as they launched knife and gun attacks, dead.
