Hundreds of migrants storm train to nowhere after police end two-day stand-off

Migrants trying to get to northern Europe have stormed a train at Budapest’s main railway station. Hundreds of people tried to push themselves and their children into the carriages through doors and windows at Keleti station in the Hungarian capital. But despite the doors to the station opening, Hungary’s railway operator said no direct trains would be travelling to western Europe owing to “railway transport” security reasons.

The fact is, we don’t want to stay in Hungary. If we stay in Hungary there is no work. We can’t study. The language is very strange, and they’re not helping refugees

The incident came at the end of a two-day stand-off with police who had refused to let migrants enter the station, even though some had bought tickets. There were scuffles with police and some migrants had threatened to walk the 105 miles (170km) to the border with Austria if they were not allowed to get on the train. It was not clear why the police had relented on Thursday. Asked if they would instead be taken to holding camps, a government spokesman answered: “That is their best chance.”
