‘I thought that was it’: 7 hurt as violent turbulence grounds flight

Seven people were taken to hospital after a plane from Miami to Milan ran into heavy turbulence. The American Airlines plane was forced to make an emergency landing in eastern Canada at around 9.45pm on Sunday. One passenger, Gustavo Canda, told Canada’s CBC News: "I’m just happy to be alive. It was scary. I was just praying the whole time because it was scary.“ The Boeing 767 was met on the runway at St John’s International Airport in Newfoundland by at least four ambulances and three fire engines.

It rolled on its side. Everything went flying. It was pretty intense. I really thought that was it.

Passenger Karen Case

Passenger Karen Case said people were screaming and that some passed out. A spokesman for American Airlines said three flight attendants and four passengers were taken to hospital for evaluation. None of the injuries are thought to be life threatening. The plane was carrying 192 passengers and 11 crew members. American Airlines said the cabin’s seatbelt light was on when the jet hit "severe” turbulence. The airline is working to get the remaining passengers to Milan – the plane was due to be kept in St John’s overnight.
