Indian media magnate is charged with murder of his stepdaughter

One of India’s most powerful media moghul’s has been charged with the murder of his stepdaughter. Peter Mukerjea, a former chief executive of Star India, has also been charged with abduction, destruction of evidence and giving false information. His wife, Indrani, is accused along with her driver and ex-husband of strangling Sheena Bora before dumping her body in a forest and setting it alight. Although Mukerjea was out of the country at the time of the murder, he was alleged to have been actively involved in the conspiracy to kill his stepdaughter.

The 22-year-old victim was Indrani’s daughter from a previous marriage. She was murdered in April 2012 and her remains found a month later in woods in the western state of Maharashtra, which has Mumbai as its capital. Indrani was arrested last August on suspicion of murdering her daughter, who was having an affair with her husband’s son, Rahul, from a previous marriage. Among the motives being considered include a row over property dealings and anger at the relationship.
