A cat in Florida is on the mend after clawing his way back from the dead, surfacing five days after he was hit by a car and buried for dead, according to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. Bart the cat is recovering from a broken jaw and facial injuries, said the agency on Wednesday, the day after he underwent surgery. One of his eyes was wounded so badly it had to be removed. The Humane Society is calling Bart a “miracle cat,” while the ordeal earned him the nickname “zombie cat” on social media. Bart’s seemingly lifeless body was buried after he was hit by a car earlier this month, local media said. Five days later, he showed up alive in a neighbor’s yard, according to a blog post by the Humane Society.
He had dug himself out of the grave and slowly made his way back home, albeit weak, dehydrated and in need of medical attention.

The cat’s owner, Ellis Hutson, 52, said he found Bart the cat two weeks ago in the middle of the road, lifeless in a puddle of blood. Hutson said he asked his friend to help bury the 23-month old cat, because the landscaper was so distraught after losing a companion he’s had since he was a kitten. Then Bart came back five days later. “I open the door and my neighbor’s standing there with the cat in her hand,” Hutson said. “She said, ‘Bart is not dead.’ I said, ‘That’s impossible. We buried Bart.’ Bart was a kitten from Hutson’s girlfriend’s cat. He said this has been an emotional ordeal for him and his girlfriend, but he hasn’t tried explaining the situation to his two-year old daughter.
I saw him with my own eyes. I know he was dead. He was cold and stiff. Now my kids believe their cat will also rise from the dead. But I told them I don’t think so.
