Man swept out to sea while scattering sister’s ashes in North Cornwall

A 51-year-old man remains missing after he was swept out to sea while scattering his sister’s ashes in Port William on the Cornwall coast. Two others who were with him at the time went into the sea in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue him. Despite extensive searches by coastal rescue teams on Saturday and Sunday, the man – named by BBC News as Shane Galliers – has not been found. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said no further searches were planned. Conditions for the search have been unfavourable with gale force winds and rough seas.

My mum and him [Mr Galliers] were incredibly close. They kept each other sane throughout the entirety of their lives.

Family members told BBC News the spot chosen was “a very personal spot for the family”, where the ashes of most deceased family members had been brought. Coastguard rescue teams from Boscastle and Port Isaac were involved in the shoreline search and a search and rescue helicopter from RMB Chivenor also assisted the operation.
