‘My head hurts’: Father hears over the phone moment his daughter is fatally shot

A grieving father has recounted the moment he heard over the phone his daughter get fatally shot. David O'Connor said he didn’t realise what was happening as his daughter, Aaren, was hit by a stray bullet while chatting to her dad outside her apartment. The 25-year-old’s father David told CBS Chicago: “Every few moments she said, 'My head hurts. My head hurts’.” He said he hung up without knowing the tragic events unfolding in Chicago.

I didn’t realise at the time but I was just having the last conversation with my daughter.

Mr O'Connor discovered what had happened when he contacted his daughter’s boyfriend, who called her roommate to check up on her. Ms O'Connor was found unresponsive in her car and was taken to hospital. She died on Sunday. CBS Chicago reported she had moved from San Diego, California to the city last year for a new job and to be closer to her boyfriend. In the aftermath of her death, Ms O'Connor’s friends have set up a GoFundMe page, with the money donated going towards helping at-risk young people in Chicago and funding a scholarship in her memory.
