One person has been killed and 10 injured after a Dutch passenger train hit a maintenance crane and derailed. Pictures on Dutch news websites showed four carriages lying on their side in a field after the collision, which happened at around 9am local time in Dalfsen, 75 miles (120km) east of Amsterdam. An eyewitness told Dutch radio station NOS the crane was on caterpillar tracks and was crossing the railway line at the time.
Luckily it wasn’t the busiest train, so as regards casualties it won’t be as bad as it could have been.
Mayor Han Noten
Mayor Han Noten told NOS one person had died and added there were not many passengers on the train. He said none of the approximately 10 people who had been injured were in a life-threatening condition. Investigators are heading to the scene to try and establish the cause of the crash on the line between the eastern cities of Zwolle and Emmen. The train was operated by Arriva, a subsidiary of German company Deutsche Bahn.
