Platini barred from Euro 2016 draw as he loses fight to lift temporary ban

Michel Platini has failed in his bid to have his 90-day ban from football lifted. The Uefa president was told the suspension would remain in place, meaning he remains barred from this weekend’s Euro 2016 draw in Paris. The 60-year-old, who is accused of taking a £1.35m payment from his Fifa counterpart Sepp Blatter, will learn whether he will get a lifetime ban from the sport when football’s ruling body meets on December 21.

Maintaining the provisional suspension for the remainder of the 90 days does not cause irreparable harm to Michel Platini at this point in time

Court of Arbitration for Sport statement

The interim 90-day suspensions on Platini and Blatter were announced in September after Swiss police opened a criminal investigation. Both parties said they had a “gentleman’s agreement” over the payments as part of a deal over the remuneration Platini would receive to work as an adviser to the Fifa president between 1998 and 2002. But on Friday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport insisted the temporary ban should remain it place. It said it would be wrong for Fifa to extend the suspension but the point is moot as the decision on the lifetime ban is only a week away.

The adjudicatory chamber has stated that it intends to come to a decision during the month of December
