Professor Stephen Hawking set to make Glastonbury appearance

Professor Stephen Hawking is to appear at the Glastonbury Festival, sharing the bill with acts such as The Who and Foo Fighters. The mathematician, who has previously appeared in The Simpsons and Star Trek, will attempt to wow youngsters in the Kidz Field with his gravitational theories. A message on the Glastonbury website said he would make “a special guest appearance”. Rock legends The Who were named last week as the final headliners, while Pharrell Williams, Florence And The Machine and Mark Ronson are among the other performers.

One day there may well be proof of multiple universes … and in that universe Zayn is still in One Direction.

The Kidz Field, which is aimed at children aged 12 and under, will also be graced by TV magician Dynamo. This year’s festival takes place between 24 and 28 June in Somerset, in the southwest of England. Professor Hawking (pictured), who was once sampled by Pink Floyd, was given just a few years to live when, at the age of 22, he was diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease. The 73-year-old is celebrated as one of the most brilliant scientific minds of the modern age despite being almost completely paralysed. He is not the first professor to play Glastonbury, with Professor Brian Cox turning up in 2011 and the musician Professor Green entertaining crowds two years ago.
