Rocket attack on UN peacekeeping base in Mali leaves three dead

Gunmen fired rockets in an attack on a base for UN peacekeepers in Mali, leaving three people dead. Up to five rockets landed inside the base in the northern town of Kidal, killing two peacekeepers and a civilian. Kidal has been the site of frequent fighting between rebels despite several attempts at ceasefires signed with the country’s government. It is in northern Mali, which was occupied by Islamist fighters, including groups linked to al-Qaeda, in 2012. The latest attack comes just over a week after extremist gunmen stormed a luxury hotel in the capital, Bamako leaving 20 dead. At least two armed men attacked the Radisson Blu hotel on 20 November, killing six Russians, three Chinese nationals, an American and several others.
