Russia’s 2018 World Cup logo revealed as FIFA boss condemns any boycott

World football boss Sepp Blatter said Tuesday that FIFA categorically backs Russia’s staging of the 2018 World Cup, opposes any boycott and praised its preparations. Diplomatic sources said last month that European nations were discussing a British-backed plan to boycott President Vladimir Putin’s showpiece staging of the World Cup because of the conflict in eastern Ukraine. FIFA won’t say if it has decided to keep Russia and Ukraine apart in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup, despite reports to the contrary.

Russia is in the eye of the international media. Football can not only unite Russia but show the whole world that it is stronger that any protest movement.

Blattler also revealed the logo for the 2018 World Cup in Russia - with the help of a crew of cosmonauts. The logo depicts the World Cup trophy in red and blue, colors from the Russian flag, with gold trim. Unveiling the logo on a Russian state TV talk show, Blatter said the logo would show Russia’s ”heart and spirit.” It was then presented over video link by a crew of three Russian cosmonauts on the International Space Station.
