Seven UK terror attacks ‘stopped’ in last six months, says PM Cameron

British intelligence agents have foiled a terrorist plot on UK soil in the last month, Downing Street has said, as the Prime Minister warned a Paris-style attack could happen here. David Cameron said seven attacks had been stopped in the past six months, but Number 10 officials later clarified they were thwarted in the space of 12 months. However, they added that one of the plots disrupted by the intelligence agencies had come since September. The Prime Minister said the plots were on a smaller scale to Paris but added the attacks in the French capital were “the sort of thing we were warned about”.

We should be clear that those attacks [in Paris] could have happened in Belgium, it could have happened in Denmark, it could have happened in Sweden, it could happen here.

Mr Cameron, who has also announced 1,900 more spies will be recruited in the UK to tackle the terror threat, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that intelligence services were aware of cells in Syria radicalising Britons in order to carry out attacks in the UK. He said Britain faced a “generational struggle” against IS which intended to “destroy us and our values”. Mr Cameron said it was important for people in Britain to “carry on with our lives” and not to be cowed by terrorists, adding he would be happy to take his children to the England v France friendly on Tuesday at Wembley.

Whenever anything like this happens you have to go right back to the drawing board and look at what happened and how many people were involved and how many locations were involved, and what more steps you need to take to try to keep yourself safe.
