Shark attack in northeast Australia leaves swimmer seriously injured

A man is in a serious condition after fighting off a shark while swimming in the sea off the coast of northeast Australia. The 30-year-old was attacked off Miall Island near Rosslyn Bay, 420 miles (670km) north of Brisbane in Queensland. He survived by apparently fighting off the animal but has extensive injuries to his arms, the local coast guard commander Arthur Hunt said.

From what I understand he was snorkelling a bit off the beach and said he saw a lot of fish and then the shark came out of nowhere. It’s the first shark attack we’ve had up here in a while - I’ve been (with the coast guard) for seven years and this is my first.
