Sinkhole shock: Frightening moment for couple as they step off bus

Officials in South Korea are vowing to take a close look at public infrastructure after a frightening video, which shows a young couple stepping from a public transit bus and the sidewalk collapsing under their feet, made the rounds on social media sites. The footage shows the couple plunging through the pavement, shortly after exiting a bus in Seoul as other passers-by look on in horror. Seoul Metropolitan City officials and the Korean Geotechnical Society now investigating how the sinkhole was created.

We are also planning to figure out other causes for the sinking by looking at various construction records and by investigating the site.

The incident happened near an apartment construction site on Feb. 20. Firefighters rescued the young man and woman who fell three metres (10ft). Neither of them was seriously injured and both were discharged from hospital after receiving treatment. On Tuesday, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in South Korea ordered a nationwide survey of construction sites and their immediate surroundings to check for dangers like sinkholes and other subsidence.
