Six-month-old baby among dead in gunman’s killing spree at traveller camp

Four people including a six-month-old baby and a police officer have been killed after a drunken gunman opened fire at a traveller camp in France. The the baby’s mother and grandfather were killed with the infant, while the woman’s three-year-old child was also seriously wounded when the attacker shot the victims in a caravan. The gunman opened fire on the officers when they arrived at the camp, killing one and wounding another. He was then shot and wounded by officers, who arrived at the scene promptly because it was so close to a police station.

One gendarme was wounded, another was killed and the gendarmes retaliated which cut this tragedy short

State prosecutor Bernard Farret

Gendarmes were alerted after gunfire was reported at a Roma camp in the northern town of Roye. State prosecutor Bernard Farret said the gunman “went to a caravan, shot a woman, shot her two children and the children’s grandfather”. He added: “He then left the caravan and because it was so close to the gendarmerie, gendarmes arrived quickly on the scene. When the man saw the gendarmes he fired several times towards the gendarmes." The suspect, who is said to be a member of the same travelling community, was arrested. The circumstances and motive for the killings have not yet been established, police said.
