Sleeping beauty: Kate and William present new royal princess to the world

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have left hospital with their newborn daughter to roaring applause from waiting crowds. Kate held the as-yet unnamed princess which was wrapped in a white blanket and a cream woollen hood. The royal couple briefly waved to crowds and the world’s media outside St Mary’s Hospital in London. They went back inside to place the baby in a car seat and then came back out. Kate held William’s hand as they walked down the steps together - he carried the car seat.

Very happy.

William, speaking briefly to reporters outside the hospital

William placed the newborn on the back seat of a Range Rover and then he drove the family to their home at Kensington Palace. Their daughter was born at 8.34am and Prince William had been present for the birth. Both mother and their second child, who weighed 8lb 3oz, were “doing well”, the palace said. The princess will now spend her first night at home.

The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.
