Slice of history: a piece of Princess Diana’s 33-year-old wedding cake auctioned

A 33-year-old slice of cake from Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s 1981 wedding has sold at auction for $1,375 this week. The cake, still in its original white and silver presentation box and wrapped in paper, was sold online by Nate D. Sanders Auctions of Los Angeles. With the box was a card stating, “With best wishes from Their Royal Highnesses, the Prince & Princess of Wales.” The slice (seen above) was purchased by an anonymous bidder, who was only the second person to bid on the item. Also sold this week was a piece of toast from Charles and Diana’s breakfast after the wedding. Auction house spokesman Sam Heller said that the buyer is a private collector. This is not the first slice from Charles and Diana’s nuptials to be snapped up at auction. In 2012, a 31-year-old slice was auctioned off in Beverly Hills, along with a slice from Kate and William’s 2011 wedding. There’s apparently a group of royal cake collectors dedicated to this - some of whom have even purchased cake dating back to the wedding of Britain’s Queen Victoria, who married in 1840. What is one to do with these slices of mouldy history? Not eat them, that’s for certain.
