Taliban suicide squad guns down worshippers as they pray in air base mosque

Taliban fighters killed 16 people inside a mosque during a brazen morning attack on an air base on Friday. The attackers broke into the mosque inside the compound of the the Badaber base in Peshawar and gunned down worshippers as they were praying. A fierce gun battle then erupted and 13 attackers and an army captain were reported to have been killed. Pakistani Taliban spokesman Muhammad Khurasani said a “suicidal unit” had carried out the attack.

Militants had “explosives-laden jackets and were armed with hand-propelled grenades, mortars, AK-47 rifles”, an official said. About 20 people, including 10 soldiers, were also injured in the exchange of fire, it was reported. Pakistan military spokesman Maj Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa said the “terrorists” entered the base from two different points on Friday. A rapid response force contained the attackers around a guard room, he added. "Clearance operations" were in progress to secure the site, he said.
