Teenager shot after he stabs soldier at West Bank border checkpoint

A Palestinian teenager was shot after he stabbed and wounded a soldier in the occupied West Bank on Friday. Mussab Ghanimat, 17, attacked as the soldier, a Bedouin tracker, opened a gate to enable Palestinians to harvest their olive trees. He was wounded when Israeli troops at the security fence in Gush Etzion opened fire. The attacker was said to be conscious and in a moderate condition in hospital while the soldier was being treated for a light wound to his shoulder.

The force responded, firing towards the assailant.

The incident is the latest in a string of knife and other tit-for-tat attacks which have left dozens dead and injured and ratcheted tensions between Palestinians and Israel. However, on Friday, Israeli police lifted age restrictions for the main weekly prayers at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound for the first time in weeks. The restrictions on male worshippers were imposed on Fridays since mid-September when repeated clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli police erupted at the site. The restrictions had meant only men over the age of 40, 45, or 50, were allowed to enter the mosque compound in east Jerusalem that is Islam’s third-holiest site.

For the moment, no age limitations on worshippers’ entry
