The big one: East Coast braces for shutdown during ‘historic’ blizzard

The northeastern United States, from Philadelphia to Boston, is preparing for snowfall that could exceed 3 feet in some areas, setting records and bringing commerce to a standstill. The National Weather Service has already issued a blizzard warning — meaning near-white-out conditions with winds over 35 mph — from Monday afternoon until Tuesday. Residents are urged to stay home. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said the storm could be “the likes of which we have never seen before,” while Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker warned residents that roads will be “very hard, if not impossible, to navigate.”

Don’t underestimate this storm. Prepare for the worst.

In advance of the storm, airlines have canceled thousands of Monday and Tuesday flights out of the three major cities — Boston, New York and Philadelphia — with United canceling all Tuesday flights out of the region. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that mass transit and roadways, including the state’s major highways, could be closed before the evening rush hour, though no other cities or states have said outright that shutdowns could happen.
