The future ain’t what it used to be: Baseball legend Yogi Berra dies, aged 90

Baseball legend Yogi Berra, regarded as one of the greatest players the game has ever seen, has died aged 90. Hall of Famer Berra died of natural causes at his home in New Jersey, according to Dave Kaplan, director of a museum dedicated to the New York Yankees catcher. "While we mourn the loss of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, we know he is at peace with Mom,“ his family said in a statement released by the museum. "We celebrate his remarkable life, and are thankful he meant so much to so many.”

We are deeply saddened by the loss of a Yankees legend and American hero.

Lawrence Peter Berra, the son of Italian immigrants and known to the world as Yogi, was a tough catcher and a feared clutch hitter who helped the Yankees dominate baseball from 1947 to 1963. On a team packed with great players like Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio, Berra led the Yanks in runs batted in for seven consecutive seasons. He helped the team reach 14 World Series during his 18 seasons in the Bronx. As well as being famous for his baseball prowess, Berra became known for his many catchphrases, such as “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over”. He was said to have inspired the cartoon character Yogi Bear.
