The name’s Bard. James Bard: Daniel Craig takes on Othello role in New York

British actors Daniel Craig and David Oyelowo are to star together in a production of Othello in New York. Selma star Oyelowo will play the title role with Bond actor Craig taking on Iago in the New York Theatre Workshop production. As the promotional campaign for latest 007 offering Spectre ramps up, some might have expected Craig to take a break from work. However, the play is expected to run next autumn and additional casting will be announced later.

I’m eager to see what these original, creative artists come up with in response to Shakespeare’s enduring tragedy.

Like Hamlet and Macbeth, Othello is a Shakespearean protagonist driven mad by suspicion and fear. In the play, Othello’s trusted lieutenant spins a web to make him doubt his wife’s fidelity. Oyelowo is next slated to co-star with Zoe Saldana in the film Nina, about singer Nina Simone.
