The Queen’s not dead: BBC tweet deleted after reporter’s phone hacked

A BBC journalist caused panic when she tweeted that Queen Elizabeth had been hospitalised - and was dead. The tweets - that have now been deleted - claimed that the Queen had been treated at the King Edward 7th Hospital in London but had passed away.  BBC Broadcast journalist Ahmen Khawaja, whose account sent out the tweets, swiftly deleted them, hinting that they were sent by someone else. She had left her phone unattended during a BBC “royal death rehearsal”.

False Alarm: Have deleted previous tweets!! Phone left unattended at home. Silly prank, Apologies for upsetting anyone!

The Telegraph reported that the BBC’s head of newsgathering, John Munro, had told all staff to keep details of the rehearsal off social media. On the day news of her “death” appeared, the Queen was was celebrating the 62nd anniversary of her coronation and gun salutes took place all over the UK. Both German newspaper Bild and U.S. broadcaster CNN carried the false report before deleting them.
