The toy-maker awakens: Rey to be added to Star Wars Monopoly after fan outcry

Toy maker Hasbro has caved in to fan pressure after leaving out the lead character in the new Star Wars film from its special edition Monopoly game. It says it will now include Rey, played by British actress Daisy Ridley in The Force Awakens, as one of the game’s tokens after a worldwide outcry. Hasbro, which claimed it left her out to avoid spoiling the plot for fans, announced the move in a tweet, saying: “We share your passion for Rey and are happy to share the we will be including her in the Monopoly: Star Wars game available later in the year.”

Congratulations on meeting minimum expectations, Hasbro.

Twitter user John Sharpe is muted in his praise for the change of heart

#WheresRey has been trending on Twitter since last year after fans noticed the character was not among the tokens in the latest version of the game. Other tokens in the game included new baddie Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker and even Darth Vader - who dies at the end of the episode before The Force Awakens. Finn, another new character and potential plot spoiler, was also included. The U-turn was given a lukewarm welcome by fans, who said it was long overdue. One Twitter user, Mom Fears My Music, said: “You get no kudos for doing what you should have done in the first place. Shameful.”

We are thrilled with the popularity of this compelling character and will continue to look for ways to showcase Rey across all of our product lines
