U.S. Secretary of State Kerry breaks leg in Alps cycling crash

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has broken his leg in a bicycle crash in the French Alps, his spokesman said. He was flown to Geneva University Hospital by helicopter after the accident near Scionzier, about 40km (25 miles) from the Swiss border. Mr Kerry has called off the remainder of his four-nation trip and will return to the U.S. for treatment. His spokesman John Kirby said Mr Kerry’s right femur was broken in the crash.

The Secretary is stable and never lost consciousness, his injury is not life-threatening, and he is expected to make a full recovery.

Mr Kirby said paramedics and a doctor were with Mr Kerry’s motorcade when the crash happened. The Secretary of State often cycles while on his diplomatic trips and often takes his bike with him on the plan. Ending his trip means Mr Kerry will skip meetings with Spanish leaders and Paris conference on tackling the Islamic State group. Before the accident, Mr Kerry held talks in Geneva on Saturday to help secure a nuclear deal with Iran. A senior Iranian negotiator said Mr Kerry’s meeting with Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif failed to bridge differences between Tehran and world powers. It came amid heightened diplomatic moves to try to end a 12-year standoff and put a nuclear bomb beyond Iran’s reach.
