101-year-old man pulled alive from Nepal quake rubble

A 101-year-old man has been pulled alive from the rubble of his home more than a week after the earthquake in Nepal. Funchu Tamang was rescued on Saturday and is now in hospital in the Nuwakot district, north-west of Kathmandu, with only minor injuries, police official Arun Kumar Singh said. Police also rescued three women from under rubble on Sunday in Sindupalchowk, one of the districts worst hit by the quake, although it was not immediately known how long they had been trapped. One had been buried by a landslide while the other two were under the rubble of a collapsed house.

He was brought to the district hospital in a helicopter. His condition is stable. He has injuries on his left ankle and hand. His family is with him.

Rescuers also found about 50 bodies on a popular trekking route that was hit by an avalanche. The current toll of 7,056 dead is likely to rise as an entire village was carried away by the avalanche and many more people are believed to have died, officials said. The entire village of Langtang was wiped out by the avalanche, where at least 200 other people are still missing, including villagers and trekkers, said Uddhav Bhattarai, the seniormost bureaucrat in the district.
