Eight killed and 44 injured as charter bus crashes on trip to casino

A bus has crashed and rolled over in Texas, killing eight people and injuring 44 others. The chartered bus was on its way to a casino in Eagle Pass when the driver lost control on Highway 83 about 45 miles north of Laredo. Seven people died at the scene and another died later in hospital. The driver was injured but survived the crash, one of the deadliest in Texas in recent years.

The driver of the bus lost control and rolled over. Everything’s real preliminary right now. Our troopers are going to look into what happened but it’s going to take us some time.

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Conrad Hein

It was raining at the time of the crash but investigators are unsure if it played any part in the accident. A team from the National Transportation Safety Board was expected to arrive on Sunday to try to find out what happened. Most of the injured suffered minor injuries, although one was transferred to critical care. "I extend my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the individuals who lost their lives and those who were injured in this tragic accident,“ said Sheriff Martin Cuellar, from Webb County, where the crash happened on Saturday morning.
